The year-long celebration of Tipu Sultan's bicentenary will begin in January.

Karnataka Minister of State for Home Roshan Baig, who is also the chairman of the Hazarat Tipu Sultan Shaheed Commemorative Committee, said a booklet on Tipu's life would be published on the occasion.

Besides, an international centre for historical research and a centre for crafts or police training will be set up in Srirangapatnam, erstwhile capital of Tipu's kingdom, Mysore.

Functions will also be held in Bangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga and Delhi.

On May 4, Tipu's 200th death anniversary, a function will be held in Srirangapatnam. A delegation from France, a country which Tipu had close ties with, is expected.

Certain documents and artefacts related to Tipu are now in French custody. On his next visit to Delhi, Chief Minister J H Patel will take up with the French ambassador the issue of returning them.

Baig said the Archaeological Survey of India had lodged a complaint about encroachment in Srirangapatnam by certain people who claim to be Tipu's descendants. The government will set up a committee under historian Sheik Ali to find the real descendants of the king, famed as the Tiger of Mysore, he said.
