ASSEMBLY POLL '98

Mamata assault case referred to committee on privilegesA notice of breach of privilege given by the Trinamul Congress against Daroga Prasad Saroj of the Samajwadi Party for allegedly assaulting Mamata Banerjee in the Lok Sabha on December 11, has been referred to the committee on privileges by the Speaker. In a letter to the Speaker, Sudip Bandyopadhyay said members belonging to the SP, including Saroj, were standing and shouting 'mahila bill wapas lo' and opposing the women's reservation bill. Suddenly, Saroj and some other members of the same party rushed towards the women who were supporting the bill and started pushing them and physically assaulted them. Saroj then kicked Banerjee from behind and inflicted blows on her, Bandyopadhyay claimed. She had lost her balance and was falling on the carpet. If Saroj was not restrained by the other lady members, including Banerjee, he would have crushed the mike on the table of Speaker. There was complete chaos in the House, especially in front of the well. The Samajwadi Party members tried to repeat the same scene when they had snatched away the copy of bill while being introduced by the law and justice minister, the Trinamul leader said. UNI
