774 civilians killed in NE this year

Insurgency has claimed 774 civilian lives from 1,700 incidents in the north-east this year (till December 2), Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani informed the Lok Sabha during question hour on Tuesday.

This is compared to 827 deaths from 1,479 incidents in 1997.

He said insurgency was on the rise in Assam and Tripura. The Centre would intervene to co-ordinate the anti-insurgency operations between the paramilitary forces and local police, if the states so desired.

Advani admitted that at present there was lack of co-ordination between the two. Paramilitary forces could assist the police well, he added.
