Kerala HC's remedies for misuse of MPs' quota

E-Mail this report to a friend

Either the Lok Sabha Speaker or the ministries concerned should evolve a mechanism to prevent out-of-turn cooking gas and telephone allotments by members of Parliament, the Kerala high court has suggested.

Disposing of a writ petition, Justice C S Rajan said guidelines would minimise such misuse of liquid petroleum gas and telephone connections.

The court appreciated Additional Solicitor General C S Vaidyanathan submission that the Union government had evolved certain guidelines in the matter. He prayed that the stay on allotments in the MPs' quota be vacated.

To safeguard the interest of the general public, the court made the following suggestions: LPG and telephone connections in MP quota must be given only to those from the current waiting list, gas connection must be used only for domestic purposes.

The court said in order to ensure that the guidelines are complied with, either the Speaker or the ministries concerned should publish the guidelines.

The names of the beneficiaries should also be made public, it said.
