9 militants, 7 others killed in Kashmir on Human Rights Day
At least six persons, including two women, were killed and 20 others injured in a powerful grenade blast in north Kashmir last evening.
Elsewhere in the state, nine terrorists and a police constable were killed in the last 24 hours.
Life in Kashmir was crippled today by a bandh (general strike) called by the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference in protest against alleged human rights violation by security forces.
About a dozen leaders of the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party, including its chief Shabir Ahmad Shah, were arrested for violating prohibitory orders.
Official sources said security forces foiled an infiltration attempt when they arrested 19 boys who were being taken to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for arms training. The boys admitted that activists of a banned organisation were taking them across the border.
An official spokesman said unidentified militants lobbed a hand-grenade at a bus stand at Bandipora in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla last evening. Six persons, including two women, were killed and 20 were injured.
He said terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device when an army vehicle passed by Nadihal Bandipora at about 11.45am IST today. One soldier was injured and the vehicle was badly damaged.
Panic gripped Pattan Bazaar when terrorists shot and killed a police constable, Mohammad Ashraf, this morning.
Security forces averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful improvised bomb planted by terrorists at Sultanpora Pattan last evening.
The spokesman said security forces killed four militants each at Allal Mangota and Kanga Gali since last evening. Eight AK-56 assault rifles and two wireless sets were found at the sites.
Security forces shot dead another terrorist when he tried to flee from an area cordoned off at Zainapora in Anantnag district last evening. One AK-56 rifle, five magazines, 125 rounds, one grenade and one wireless set were seized during the search.
One militant surrendered with his pistol, two magazines, and 30 rounds at Kupwara last evening.
Meanwhile, shops and business establishments in Srinagar and other major towns of the valley remained closed on a hartal (general strike) call given by the APHC on World Human Rights Day. The APHC claims that security forces are committing excesses in the valley and Doda district.
Transport was off the road and government and quasi-government offices were deserted. Educational institutions also remained closed.
