ASSEMBLY POLL '98

Mulayam blames Rao's government for growth of BJPRashtriya Loktantrik Morcha convenor Mulayam Singh Yadav has said that faulty policies of the last Congress government at the Centre had led to the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition. Addressing the 'khabardar' (warning) rally in Patna, Yadav argued that had the Congress followed the Gandhian philosophy in true spirit, the country's governance would not have gone into the hands of the fascist and communal forces. He, however, said the country would soon have a government for the poor and the downtrodden. Toeing the line of Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav, he too declared that Bihar could be divided only over his body. The Centre's design to divide Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh was to "exploit and suck the blood" of the weaker sections, minorities and tribals, he said, and added that the decision was politically motivated. He said the BJP was dividing Bihar with a view to weakening the unity and integrity of the nation. He appealed to the political parties supporting bifurcation of the state to dissociate themselves from the BJP's design and urged the people to teach a fitting lesson to the parties pursuing separatist politics. Yadav deplored the Congress for having "connived" with the BJP-led coalition's design to divide the state. He said even though there was no direct evidence of Laloo Prasad Yadav's involvement in the fodder scam, he was implicated in the case by influencing the Central Bureau of Investigation. Taking exception to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's statement that mafia raj was prevailing in Bihar, Yadav said it was an insult to a woman chief minister, Rabri Devi, and the people of the state.
