Congress fears political killings in Assam

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Assam Congress has said that it apprehended large-scale political assassinations in the state.

Talking to the media in Guwahati, opposition leader in the assembly Sylvius Condpan alleged that killers would soon target politicians of his side.

"If the killings are not stopped forthwith, it will certainly lead to political assassinations," he said referring to a series of killings in the past months, which has shaken the confidence of the common people.

Over 40 people were killed in Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sibsagar districts of upper Assam, and Guwahati, Condpan said. The police have not arrested even a single person, he added.

He accused the state government of "masterminding" the killings.

The opposition parties had been alleging that the authorities were using the army and surrendered extremists of the United Liberation Front of Asom to carry out murders.

Condpan questioned the Centre's role in the incidents. "Even the home ministry is not responding," he said.
