E-Mail this report to a friend

The thirty-month-old Asom Gana Parishad-led four-party coalition government headed by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta survived a no-confidence motion in the Assam assembly today.

The motion was put to vote after a marathon discussion.

In all, 64 members voted against the motion while 34 voted in favour. There are 126 members in the assembly.

The motion was sponsored jointly by the main opposition Congress and the United Minority Front.

The Autonomous State Demand Committee, the People's Democratic Front, the Bodoland State Movement Council, and the Bharatiya Janata Party members abstained from voting.

State Supply Minister Digen Bora and Congress leader Sarat Barakataki could not attend the session as they were indisposed.

Estranged AGP leader Bhrigu Kumar Phukan was conspicuous by his absence during the session.

The opposition brought the motion alleging failure of the AGP-led government on all fronts.
