E-Mail this report to a friend

The much-discussed bus service between New Delhi and Lahore is expected to start by the middle of January 1999.

An agreement to facilitate this was signed by the Indian and Pakistani teams in Islamabad today.

According to a joint statement issued by the two sides, the agreement and protocol initialled by them provides a framework and operational mechanism for the proposed bus service.

The statement did not, however, specify if the buses would operate daily or on specific days.

The fares decided for the journey have also not been disclosed.

K R Bhati, joint secretary in the surface transport ministry, led the Indian side while Ashraf Hayat, additional secretary in the communications ministry, led the Pakistanis.

The Indians also met M Akram Sheikh, communications secretary.
