Ahmedabad's name to stay for the time beingThe government of India has decided not to change the name of Ahmedabad to Karnavati for the time being, Home Minister L K Advani informed the Rajya Sabha today. He said the proposal for changing the name had been received from the Gujarat government after a resolution had been passed by the Ahmedabad municipal corporation. To a question pertaining to the attack against Christian nuns, the home minister said there was one case each in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The states had the primary responsibility of tackling the crime and the states had been advised to issue suitable instructions to the districts to respond immediately to the complaints of harassment and atrocities against minorities and punish the guilty. The recent meeting of chief ministers on November 27 had considered the problem and the states had been requested for their views for strengthening the legal provisions regarding the rape, he added. On the issue of rape of girls and women in the states, there were 14,393 cases in 1997 in the country. During the previous two years, the figure was 14,846 in 1996 and 13,754 in 1995. UNI
