President okays bill on takeover of Wodeyar's Mysore palace

President K R Narayanan has given his assent to the bill passed by the Karnataka legislature on the takeover of the Mysore palace owned by the scion of the Wodeyar royal family, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M C Nanaiah told newsmen in Bangalore today that he received a telephonic message from the secretary to the President to this effect today.

Chief Minister J H Patel had last week called on the President and impressed upon him the need for giving assent to the bill at the earliest in view of the Dasara festivities beginning on September 20.

The bill, the Mysore Palace (acquisition and transfer) Bill, among other things, provided for transfer of the palace and the open space around it to the state government for its preservation.
