Group set up to prepare note on proxy voting for armed forces

Defence Minister George Fernandes has announced the setting up of a four-member secretaries group to prepare a note for the Cabinet on permitting proxy voting for armed forces personnel within 15 days.

The defence minister, who made this announcement after a meeting on proxy voting at the South Block in New Delhi, said the group of secretaries would also prepare a draft legislative amendment for the purpose.

The group will comprise the defence secretary, the home secretary, secretary (personnel) and the secretary (legislative affairs).

The meeting was chaired by the defence minister and attended by the prime minister's Principal Secretary Brajesh Mishra, Defence Secretary Ajit Kumar, Home Secretary B P Singh, Secretary (legislative affairs) Dr Raghuvir Singh, Secretary (personnel) Arvind Verma and Deputy Election Commissioner Subhas Pani.
