Centre clears team's visit for cross-examining witness in Lakhubhai case

The Centre has cleared a six-member team, including controversial tantrik Chandra Swami and his aide Kailash Nath Agarwal to travel to Canada for cross-examining a witness in connection with Lakhubhai Pathak cheating case.

The other members of the team are Central Bureau of Investigation Deputy Superintendent of Police K P Singh, CBI counsel A K Dutt, Chandra Swami's counsel Rajinder Singh and A M Khanwilkar, counsel for former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, also an accused in the case.

The government will bear the cost of the trip, the CBI counsel informed Special Judge Ajit Bharihoke, who is hearing the case.

All earlier efforts by the CBI to bring the witness, W E Miller, to India had failed and thus, the court, on September 5, 1997, had asked the investigating agency to proceed to Canada to examine him.
