Bangla rifles kill one, injure two

Unprovoked firing from Bangladesh in West Bengal's Hili area, South Dinajpur district, has left an Indian citizen dead and two others injured.

The incident occurred when the Bangla soldiers resumed firing early Wednesday morning after a short break in a 10-hour intermittent exchange of fire with the Border Security Force, started on Tuesday evening, Home (police) Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said.

A commandant level meeting was held between the BSF and the Bangla force on Wednesday to find a settlement, official sources said.

Panic-stricken Indian citizens living in the Hili area have fled to safer places.

The district magistrate and high police and BSF officials were camping in the area where tension was palpable, the minister said.
