Arson, vandalism during 'peaceful' bandh

Rampaging mobs disrupted rail and road traffic across Bihar during the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal-sponsored 12-hour bandh on Monday.

However, state officials said the bandh was 'peaceful' and ended without any 'untoward' incidents.

Reports said bandh supporters torched a railway postal service vehicle near the Patna railway station and ransacked a restaurant in the heart of the town.

Office-goers were manhandled in Patna. Several vehicles were damaged.

A report from Munger said RJD supporters burnt a bogie of a passenger train near Sandalpur village on the Munger-Jamalpur section. The strikers ransacked the engine and other bogies of the train.

Police pickets were posted at all vulnerable points and patrolling was intensified. Sources said that about 300 bandh supporters were detained.
