Vehicles strike put offThe proposed nation-wide strike of about three million commercial vehicles from Saturday midnight has been deferred indefinitely following "satisfactory" talks between the government and transporters in Delhi. The All India Motor Transport Congress, which had been spearheading the agitation, said the decision was taken after the government reconstituted the Tariff Advisory Committee and separated it from the "stranglehold" of the General Insurance Corporation. Following day-long talks on Thursday, Insurance Regulatory Authority chairman N Rangachari had assured transporters that the third party motor insurance premium issue would be settled on or before September 30. According to the AIMTC, Rangachari had fixed August 27 as the date for discussions between the body, TAC and the insurance companies for finalising motor tariff. Rangachari said any change in the tariff would be effective retrospectively from February 15. The AIMTC said on the other major demand regarding abolition of toll on existing roads and making toll on bridges perpetual, the surface transport ministry had promised to review the scheme in a transparent manner in consultation with the AIMTC. The transporters had been assured that important amendments would also be incorporated in the Motor Vehicle Act without delay. UNI
