Navy joins women's lib!The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the induction of women as short service commission officers into all branches of the Indian navy. Till now, women were eligible only for supporting branches like education, logistics, law and air traffic control. The CCS clearance paves the way for women joining engineering and electrical branches as well as other cadres of the service. As short service commisssion officers in the navy, women will have a tenure of seven years. At present, there are 93 women officers in the Indian navy. The Induction of women officers into the education, logistics and law branches began in 1992. Air traffic control was opened to women in 1993. UNI
