K P S Gill's conviction upheld

The Punjab and Haryana high court today upheld a lower court order convicting former Punjab director general of police K P S Gill for slapping the buttocks of a female colleague, but reduced his sentence from three to one year.

Justice R L Anand also directed that the period of one year be ''unsupervised instead of supervised'' as directed by the lower court.

The compensation amount of Rs 200,000 payable to petitioner Rupan Deol Bajaj, a senior Punjab cadre IAS officer, was also upheld, but Rs 25,000 payable to her husband was waived off by the court.

The order was passed by the court while hearing a revision petition filed by Gill against the orders of the Chandigarh sessions judge. He was convicted under Sections 354 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code by the sessions court for outraging and insulting Bajaj's modesty by his words, gestures and conduct.
