NGO chief attacked in Delhi

Shankar Ghosh, executive director of the National Foundation of India, a premier non-governmental organisation, was attacked by five pistol-armed youths as he was heading back home to Palam Vihar, New Delhi, last night.

Ghosh, father of the missing social activist Sanjoy Ghosh, was attacked by the five men just as he was turning into Palam Vihar in Gurgaon at about 2130 hours.

Ghosh, who was driving his car, said he was overtaken by a white Maruti 800 which cut into his path and forced him to stop. Five young men, roughly in the age group of 19 to 25, aimed two pistols at him and tried to yank him out of his car. However, as he was strapped to the seat with the safety belt, they failed to pull him out.

Ghosh said he somehow managed to reverse the car and speed away. As he was driving off, he heard a pistol shot.

A written complaint had been made to the Gurgaon police.

Robbery seemed to be the motive behind the attack, he added.

The National Foundation of India supports several grass-root social activists and developmental journalism.

Ghosh's son, the well-known Avard-NE activist Sanjoy Ghosh, was abducted by the United Front for Liberation of Asom from Majuli island of the north-eastern state last year. His whereabouts are still not known.
