5 killed in Kashmir

Five people, including two militants and two security personnel, were killed and 14 others injured in the Kashmir valley overnight.

And in Kargil, a jawan suffered injuries in shelling from across the border.

At least seven civilians and three security personnel were injured when an explosive device went off near a college, a defence spokesperson said.

He said unidentified militants lobbed a hand grenade on a security force picket at Baripora in downtown city Wednesday afternoon. Nobody was hurt.

Militants attacked security force pickets and patrol parties with automatic weapons and hand grenades at Qazigund, Baramulla and Parimpora Tuesday evening. However, there were no casualties.

The spokesman said two foreign militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Lilam in the frontier district of Kupwara Tuesday evening. One security officer lost his life and a civilian was injured in the clash. Two AK-56 rifles and five magazines were recovered from the slain militants.

Militants fired upon a security force party at Dakshingali area last evening. In the ensuing exchange of fire, a jawan lost his life, and a labourer was injured.

At least two persons, Mohammad Razak and Haq Nawaz, were injured when an explosion took place near the Food Corporation of India godown at Surankot Tuesday evening.

At Kamalkote in Uri, the forces captured a militant. A box of ammunition was recovered from him.
