North-East MPs ask Vajpayee to honour his predecessors' promise

Members of Parliament from the North-East have met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to seek the immediate release of the Rs 73 billion package which former prime ministers H D Deve Gowda and Inder Kumar Gujral promised for the region.

Led by P A Sangma, chairman of the North-East MPs Forum, they said decisions in vital matters should be honoured.

The delegation demanded that the projects and schemes contained in the Shukla report be implemented during the Ninth Plan.

It sought the complete relief on security-related expenditures for the region, on the pattern of that provided to Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

The MPs also urged the prime minister to include elected representatives, especially parliamentarians, in the newly structured North-Eastern council.
