Lalit Mansingh is India's high commissioner to UK

After prolonged uncertainty, the government today announced the appointment of Lalit Mansingh, secretary (west) in the external affairs ministry, as India's high commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Singh replaces Salman Haidar, who had put in his papers after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government assumed office.

Haidar, a former foreign secretary, was appointed high commissioner last year by the then I K Gujral government.

A 1963 batch IFS officer, Mansingh has served the country in a wide range of important assignments. He was ambassador to the United Arab Emirates from 1980 to 1983 and high commissioner to Nigeria (with concurrent accreditation to Benin, Cameroon and Chad) from 1993 to 1995.

He assumed charged as secretary (west) in the foreign office on January 24, 1997.
