Pak shells claim 7 more lives in Kashmir, toll rises to 49

Five security personnel and two women were killed as shelling from across the border by Pakistani troops continued in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara, Baramulla and Poonch districts.

With this, the toll in the week-long border belligerence has risen to 49.

Official sources said the shells hit a Border Security Force camp at Jabla in Uri sector on Tuesday, killing four jawans on the spot and wounding two.

The women were killed under similar circumstances in the same sector. Four civilians sustained splinter injuries.

They said the security jawan was killed in Poonch district Tuesday evening.

Pakistani troops have been firing missiles, artillery and mortar shells at Indian positions in Kupwara, Baramulla, Kargil and Poonch sectors for the past one week, forcing people living near the Line of Control to migrate to safer places.

A defence spokesman said Indian troops also retaliated at Pakistani bunkers and forward posts. However, he could not give details about the casualties and damages suffered by Pak troops.
