Congress team finds great cause for worry in Gujarat

The Congress said on Tuesday that Gujarat was drifting towards a major communal conflict, with the Bharatiya Janata Party state government attacking minorities and their institutions.

Vayalar Ravi, MP, who visited Gujarat as a member of a three-men team deputed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, said that Union Home Minister L K Advani's statement supporting the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad was 'unfortunate.' It reflected the BJP's hidden agenda, and fascist and communal thinking, he said.

Ravi said his team, which visited Ahmedbad, Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat among other places, would submit a report to Sonia shortly. It recommended that the Congress should mobilise public opinion against such atrocities.

Meetings should be held to create an atmosphere of harmony and brotherhood in the state, the team said.
