Akash test-fired again

India's most sophisticated medium range surface-to-air missile, Akash, was on Monday successfully test-fired from the interim test range at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from Orissa's Balasore.

Official sources said with this, the missile, with a capacity to carry 50 kilogramme payload, had entered the penultimate phase.

Akash is one of the five missiles being developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation. It has the capability of striking several targets within 25 km.

The missile, part of the integrated guided missile development programme, uses a Ramjet propulsion system, and is powered by an air breathing engine.

Its radar surveillance system has been developed indigenously, and can simultaneously keep track of 64 aircraft within the range of 40 to 60 kms.

The Akash had already undergone tests earlier to gauge the proposition parameters and predicted range values.
