Vaghela wants law barring riparian states going to court

All India Rashtriya Janata Party president and former Gujarat chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela has urged Parliament to pass a statute prohibiting parties that are sharing water resources to move courts individually in a bid to stall projects, and said drinking water, which is a fundamental need of all the people, should always be kept above petty political interests.

Addressing a press conference in Gandhinagar, he said inter-state water disputes should be settled under this proposed law so that individual states did not move the courts and deprive the people of other states of water. The existing tribunal should help Gujarat to recover arrears from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Vaghela, who was on his way from Narayan Sarovar (Kutch) to Sardar Sarovar (Kewadia Colony) on his Narmada Rath Yatra launched on April 23, said the government should adopt a similar policy with regard to all national projects like Narmada, and matters should not be left to the court as justice delayed was justice denied.
