All-party meet to discuss peace moves in AssamCutting across lines, political parties in Assam has convened a citizen's meet in Guwahati on Thursday to find ways to bring back peace in the state. The meeting has been jointly convened by Asom Gana Parishad president and Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, state Congress president Tarun Gogoi and state Bharatiya Janata Party president Narayan Barkataki. The other parties who have agreed to attend the meeting are the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the Communist Party of India, the Janata Dal, the Autonomous State Demand Committee, the United Peoples Party of Assam and the Congress-S. The meeting urged citizens to join the discussion to formulate a way to bring back peace to the state. The meeting was been convened following the Asom Sahitya Sabha's suggestion that an expert panel be formed to look into the demands of the United Liberation Front of Asom. This move has raised hopes since a simultaneous move for negotiation have also been initiated by the Centre with Union Defence Minister George Fernandes setting the ball in motion after a hurricane visit.
