North Eastern Council to meet on Thursday

The 41st meeting of the North Eastern Council will be held at Dimapur in Nagaland on Thursday, to discuss the Centre's help and financial assistance to solve the problems of the backward region, official sources said today.

It would also discuss the initiatives of the previous H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral governments for the overall development of the region.

The Tripura government would raise the issue of its share of NEC's financial assistance, the sources said.

Since the formation of the NEC in 1972, Rs 26.90 billion had been allotted to the seven North-Eastern states, of which Tripura got only 7.5 per cent so far, the sources said. The Tripura government had demanded 13.58 per cent of the total Ninth Plan allocation.

A meeting convened by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at New Delhi on May 8, to which the chief ministers of all the seven North-Eastern states have been invited, will discuss various issues and problems facing the region.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who left for Dimapur today, told newsmen in Agartala that the New Delhi meeting would discuss among other issues, the Shukla Commission report and its recommendation, and the projects and schemes announced by the Deve Gowda government.
