AP assembly backs categorisation of SCs

The Andhra Pradesh assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the categorisation of the scheduled castes into four groups. This has been done to ensure equitable distribution of statutory benefits proportionate to their population and relative backwardness, as recommended by the Justice Rama Chandraraju Commission.

The House also resolved to impress upon the National Commission for SCs and scheduled tribes and the Union government the need to expeditiously take a decision in this regard.

Legislative Affairs Minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju pressed for a division after the voice vote, following which Speaker Y Ramakrishnudu asked the members supporting the resolution to stand. The entire House was on its feet during the division.

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, who moved the resolution, said he would take up the matter with the Centre and, if need be, lead a delegation of floor leaders of all parties to Delhi in this regard.

Raising the issue during the zero hour, Independent MLA M Narsimloo, who recently joined the Congress, demanded that the government announce a date for implementation of categorisation.

He, along with other Congress members, rushed to the podium demanding that Naidu come to the House and make an announcement in this regard.
