Task force set up to study giving more powers to states

The Union government today appointed a three-member special task force with Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as chairman for devolution of powers to states.

Dr Amresh Bagchi, member, the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, and S R Hashim, member-secretary, Planning Commission, are the other two members.

The task force will examine and recommend such measures as would enable the states to raise more resources, including by additional or alternative means, plus devolution of additional financial powers to them.

The task force will make its recommendations within four weeks, an official release said today.
