PIL filed against grant of land to wife of CM's aide

A public interest litigation was filed yesterday before the Calcutta high court challenging the distribution of 42 cottahas of land in Salt Lake to the wife of Chief Minister Jyoti Basu's confidential assistant.

The PIL, filed by Congress councillor Tarak Singh, alleged that the plot, numbering GD 346/a, was given violating all norms and regulations.

The PIL stated that the assistant's wife, Debjani Ghosh, had built an English-medium school on the plot and was raising funds for extending it further.

Earlier, West Bengal Secondary Education Minister Kanti Biswas refused to issue a no-objection certificate for opening the school. The chief minister, however, personally intervened and Biswas had to retreat by allowing permission for the school, the petitioner alleged.

The petitioner demanded that all records relating to granting the land to Ghosh and the no-objection certificate issued to the school be produced before the court.
