Ambatti acquitted in dowry case

World's youngest doctor Balamuralikrishna Ambatti has been acquitted by the Karnataka high court in the dowry case that had caught world attention.

Ruling that there was no prima facie evidence against Dr Ambatti, Justice Srinivasa Reddy quashed a petition filed by his sister-in-law Archana Nanda Ambatti.

Archana was married to Dr Ambatti's brother Jayakrishna Ambatti.

The doctor and his family members were arrested in November 1995, following allegations that had committed offences under the Dowry Prohibition Act. After their arrest, they were remanded to judicial custody for four days in Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka.

After his acquittal by the sessions judge, the state moved the Karnataka high court.
