Top Tripura militant arrested

The Assam Rifles jawans, trained in counter-insurgency operations, yesterday apprehended the self-styled commander-in-chief of All Tripura Bharat Suraksha Force, Mungia Chakma, along with arms from Chawmanu in Tripura's Dhalai district, reports received in Agartala said.

Official sources told the media today that, acting on a tipoff, the Assam Rifles jawans raided a militant hide-out and nabbed the extremist chief. A few days ago, the jawans arrested six ATBSF rebels from the same area, the sources added.

Earlier, on April 6, paramilitary forces nabbed Tripura Tribal Youth Force chief Bharat Rai Tripura and two area commanders and seized huge quantities of arms and ammunition from the same district.

The sources said both ATBSF and TTYF are sister outfits of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura. The NLFT and the All Tripura Tiger Force are the two main militant outfits in Tripura.

The state government last year promulgated the Disturbed Areas Act in 19 of the 45 police station areas in the state and deployed the Army, the Assam Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force in these areas to curb militancy.
