A Q Khan talks of long-range ballistic missiles from PakistanPakistan's nuclear scientist A Q Khan on Wednesday hinted at the development of a long-range ballistic missile in the country. ''We have the capability to further increase the range of Ghauri missile,'' he told the media in Islamabad at a reception for him following the successful testing of the medium-range missile. Khan claimed that no country in the world has the capability to hit the Ghauri missile, and rejected the Indian claim of having the capability to target the missile. Its range, size and speed make it impossible for even advanced countries to hit it, he said. Dr Khan said there was no missile gap between India and Pakistan now. Asked specifically if Pakistan was ahead of India in missile technology, he said both the countries were going parallel. To another question, Dr Khan said, "We have the capability to further increase the range of Ghauri missile." Asked what were the peaceful purposes of Ghauri, he said it could be used for launching communication satellites and keeping an eye on adversaries. Asked when Pakistan would carry out a nuclear test, Khan said, ''Seek permission from the government. We are ready for it.'' He dispelled the impression that the signing of the Chemical Weapons Convention would make it obligatory for Pakistan to open its nuclear installations for inspection. When pointed out that India was going in for a thermo-nuclear device, he said, "Thermo-nuclear devices are not required." UNI
