Pak told US about Ghauri missile, but not to stop programme at any costA few weeks before it successfully test-fired the Ghauri missile, Pakistan had told the United States that it would go ahead with its missile programme. According to The News, the Pakistan government had made it clear to the US that it would not go back on its missile development, 'whatever the cost of relations with Washington'. During his last visit to the US, Pakistan army chief General Jehangir Karamat had drawn the Clinton's administration's attention to the Bharatiya Janata Party's stand that it would pursue India's nuclear programme. Meanwhile, another report, quoting reliable sources in the federal administration, said if India carried out another nuclear explosion, 'it would not find Pakistan lagging behind.' Pakistan did not want to join the atomic blast race unless it was forced to do so, the sources said. According to these sources, Pakistan has the capability to carry out a nuclear explosion at a short notice. UNI
