Lama elected to Rajya Sabha

National Conference nominee Kushok Nawang Chamba Stanzin was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir.

His election was announced by Returning Officer Wasim Shah after the deadline for withdrawal of candidature ended on Monday evening.

Fiftysix-year-old Stanzin -- or Kushok Thiksey, as he is popularly known -- is the head Lama of the historic monastery of Thiksey. He is the first Ladakhi to represent Jammu and Kashmir in the Upper House.

The bypoll was necessitated following Professor Saifuddin Soz's resignation. He has been elected to the Lok Sabha.
