Advani to give identity to all IndiansUnion Home Minister L K Advani proposes to introduce a multipurpose citizen's identity card scheme in the country. This would replace the voter's identity cards, and serve as an all-purpose identification document. He said he had already asked his ministry to revive the old identity card system in border areas, at the earliest. Gujarat had launched this scheme in 1986 and the people in Kutch's 148 and Banaskantha's 30 villages had been given such cards. Replying to a question about illegal immigrants, he said it was a serious issue, which his ministry was taking note of. "It was among the first issues I discussed with my officials after taking charge," he said, assuring that he would chalk out a "separate scheme" to deal with the problem. UNI
