Did Aamir Khan get it right in the second season of Satyamev Jayate?
The first part of the second season of Aamir Khan's trailblazing television show Satyamev Jayate came to an end with its fifth episode on Sunday, March 30.
After a debut that was both revolutionary and polarising in tone, the response to Satyamev Jayate's newest season has been rather sedate.
There were no impassioned Twitter arguments on the show's integrity and purpose, fewer jibes at the star host's laboured scowl and even fewer noises about the insane remuneration he draws from each episode.
But the issues the show chose to address took it to the next level in almost every sense of the phrase.

1. Fighting Rape
The second season started off with discussion on one of the biggest problems India faces right now.
After the gut-wrenching Nirbhaya incident and the Shakti Mills rape case, both of which shook the entire nation, it seemed only logical to see the show kickstart with India's rape problem.
While the show instantly won brownie points for its choice of topic and raised some pertinent points, it also, as Rediff critic Sukanya Verma pointed out in her review, conveniently ignored the finer aspects of this social evil that stems from the very people who are outraged by it today -- the misogyny of administrative officials as well as the society, gross mishandling of a rape case on many levels and the constant humiliation a survivor is subjected to for the rest of their lives.

2. Indian Police
Image: A scene from Satyamev Jayate 2, episode 2The second episode of the show addressed the urgent need of police reforms in the country.
While it started off with instances of police brutality and shocking apathy towards the very people they are meant to protect, the conversation quickly veered towards the fact that Indian police is tragically short-staffed, underpaid and neglected.
Hence, the callous attitude.
It doesn't really cut it as an explanation but as far as presenting both sides to a story goes, it served the purpose.
But then, mobilising the junta can go only so far.

3. Dont Waste Your Garbage

Here, Aamir Khan talked about India's waste management problems and the glaring lack of any initiative in that direction, the state municipal corporations and their apathy, and how the general public is largely unaware of the looming disaster.
The show also presented some simple self sustainable ways of recycling and reusing the waste.

4. Kings Every Day
Image: A scene from Satyamev Jayate 2, episode 4Kings Every Day, the fourth episode of the series urged Indian citizens to be more aware of where their tax money is going.
In the wake of some of the biggest scams unearthed in independent India recently, this came as a significantly topical subject that needed a public discourse on a wide-reaching platform.
The show also called for citizens to be aware of the tools they can use to fight corruption and improper usage of their hard earned money through Right To Information Act and social audits.
5. Criminalisation of Politics

Days ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Aamir Khan concluded the first part of the show's second season with asking his fans and viewers to not just vote this year, but to vote responsibly.
It started off with statistics on convicted criminals who have been given party tickets in the past and are thriving as politicians now.
Instances where voters are bribed to vote for a particular party candidate, booth-capturing, rioting by contesting candidates, among other things, to swing votes in their favour were also discussed on the show.
