'And words are all I have to take your heart away.'
I am not sure if Shah Rukh Khan is a Bee Gees fan but his actions, correction, words sure seem to indicate so.
The superstar was recently honoured with the Chubb Fellowship at Yale University.
Following which, as is customary to such events, he was asked to impart a few words of wisdom. Only there was nothing regular about his undoubtedly dynamic, personal, charming, clever, characteristically witty and rousing speech, which unlike any of his recent movies, went on to garner rave reviews by a thundering majority.
It also reminded us about that one thing that SRK does really well. Speak.
The man's got tremendous oratory skills whether he's serenading the woman of his dreams with romantic propositions, threatening the bad guy with a (pun)ch or inspiring the underdogs to give it their best shot.
In that spirit, here's a compilation of 10 of his most popular dialogues from Hindi films.
Baazigar
'Kabhi kabhi kuch jeetne ke jiye kuch haarna bhi padta hai. Aur haar ke jeetne wale ko Baazigar kehte hain.'
Shah Rukh Khan's payback mantra worked well for his character in Baazigar. The audience, too, embraced his devious charm with open arms and the Abbas-Mustan revenge drama turned out to be a roaring success.
Darr
Image: Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan in Darr'I love you K-K-K-K-K-Kiran.'
The negativity trait flourished once again with his stammering turn as the insanely obsessive lover boy stalking Juhi Chawla in Yash Chopra's Darr.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
Image: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'Koi baat nahi Senorita, bade bade deshon main aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hai.'
Making up for all the previous negativity with niceties, SRK pulls out his stock of fond one-liners to impress a doe-eyed Simran.
But nothing caught on quite like the one mentioned here.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Image: Rani Mukerji and Shah Rukh Khan in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'Pyaar dosti hai. Agar woh meri sabse achi dost nahi ban sakti toh main usse kabhi pyaar kar hi nahi sakta. Kyunki dosti bina toh pyaar hota hi nahi.'
SRK's appealing definition of l-o-v-e induced the feeling of 'kuch kuch' among an overwhelming population of teenyboppers that year and ever since.
Mohabbatein
Image: Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan in Mohabbatein'Maaf kijeyega sir, par jahan se main dekh raha hoon aap haar gaye. Kyunki jahan se main dekh raha hoon, mujhe ek pachpan saal ka baap ek unees saal ki beti ki phool chadhi tasveer ke neeche khada dikh raha hai. Aap tab bhi hare the. Aur aap aaj bhi haarein hain.'
Amitabh Bachchan's towering personality dominates most of Mohabbatein and its frivolous miscellaneous.
But pre-climax, SRK gets that one knockout retort and he makes the most of it.
Kal Ho Naa Ho
Image: Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Naa Ho'Main aankhen bandh karta hoon toh tumhe dekhta hoon. Aankhen kholta hoon toh tumhe dekhna chahta hoon. Tum paas nahi hoti toh tumhe chaaron taraf mehsoos karta hoon. Har pal, har ghadi, har waqt mere naina meri Naina ko dhoondte hain. Usse pyaar kaho ya pagalpan ya meri dil ki dhadkan mere liye ek hi baat hai.
Pyaar toh bahut log karte hain lekin mere jaisa pyaar koi nahi kar sakta kyonki kisi ke paas tum jo nahi ho. Main tumhe bhool nahi sakta Naina. Main tumhe bhoolna hi nahi chahta. Tum meri ho, main tumhe zindagi bhar pyaar karoonga aur marte dum tak pyaar karoonga aur uske baad bhi.'
SRK's enjoys an unprecedented fan-following among women.
Read the above lines from an emotional scene in Kal Ho Naa Ho and you'll never ask why.
Swades
Image: Shah Rukh Khan in Swades'Main nahi manta humara desh duniya ka sabse mahaan desh hai. Lekin yeh zaroor manta hoon, hum mein taaqat hai, kabiliyat hai apne desh ko mahaan banane ki. Dekhiye yeh dono desh (USA and India) har pehlu, har roop mein ek dono se bahut alag hain.
Shayad mujhe kehna nahi chahiye lekin aapne baat chedi hai isliye keh raha hoon. Jab bhi hum muqable mein darne lagte hain, hum ek hi cheez ka aadhar lete hain – sanskar, parampara.'
Most filmmakers are so preoccupied milking the romantic facet of SRK, it's rare to hear him talk like a real person with real issues.
And so it's all the more wonderful to witness the man's intellectual side when he gets into a passionate discussion about social subjects, in a tone that's most earnest and believable, for Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades.
Chak De! India
Image: Shah Rukh Khan in Chake De! India'Sattar minute. Sattar minute hain tumhare paas. Shayad tumhari zindagi ke sabse khaas sattar minute. Aaj tum achchha khelo ya bura yeh sattar minute tumhe zindagi bhar yaad rahenge. Toh kaise khelna hai, aaj main tumhe nahi bataaunga, bas itna kahunga, ki jaao aur yeh sattar minute jee bhar ke khel lo. Kyunki iske baad aanewaali zindagi mein, chaahe kuch sahi ho ya na ho, chaahe kuch rahe ya na rahe, tum haaro ya jeeto lekin yeh sattar minute, tumse koi nahi chheen sakta, koi nahin.
Toh maine socha ki is match mein kaise khelna hai aaj main tumhein nahi bataaunga, balki tum mujhe bataaoge, khel kar kyunki main jaanta hoon ki agar yeh sattar minute is team ka har player apni zindagi ki sabsi badiya hockey khel gaya toh yeh sattar minute khuda bhi tumse waapas nahin maang sakta. Toh jaao, jaao aur apne aap se, is zindagi se, apne khuda se aur har uss insaan se jisne tum par bharosa nahi kiya apne sattar minute chheen lo.'
The emotionality, challenge and persuasive temperament of Jaideep Sahni's compelling pep talk to a bunch of anxious, bubbling minds is conveyed with equal reassurance, control and intensity by SRK.
Devdas
Image: Shah Rukh Khan in Devdas'Babuji ne kaha gaon chod do. Sabne kaha Paro ko chod do. Paro ne kaha sharab chod do. Aaj tumne keh diya haveli chod do. Ek din aayega jab woh kahega, duniya hi chod do.'
There are people who hated Devdas. There are people who loved Devdas.
Irrespective of your individual stand on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's opulent version, SRKs sarcastic confession to screen mom Smita Jaykar became quite a hit -- to remember and/or parody.
Aap sabne mujhe meri chahat se mila diya, thanks, thanks very much. Kehte hai ki filmon ki tarah hamari zindagi mein bhi end tak sab theek hi ho jaata hai. Happys Endings. Aur agar theek naa ho toh woh 'The End' nahi. Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost.'
It doesn't matter how sloshed SRK's Om is when he blurts out this dreamy line from Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om.
For that one moment, you believe him. Ditto for the whistle that leaves your lips.
