Here's where you've seen Krrish 3 before

Hrithik Roshan's Krrish 3 has opened brilliantly at the box office, and it's been compared to many Hollywood blockbusters.

Not only the plot but a lot of characters are similar to superhero movies in the west.

Here's where you may have seen Krrish 3 before: 

Kaya

She changes form. She can morph into someone the moment she touches them. She can walk though walls. And to top it, she has the moves of a cat burglar.

Sounds familiar?

That’s because you’ve seen these powers before in Mystique, Kitty Pryde and Rouge from the X-Men and Selina Kyle from The Dark Knight Rises.

Incidentally, Kangna Ranaut, who played Kaya in Krrish 3, did talk about the (ahem) similarities between the look of her character and those of Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) and Selina Kyle.

This is what she had to say: “We all saw Dark Knight Rises and we were amazed that the character of Anne Hathway is so much like my character. But the fact is that Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012, while we had started working on this film in 2011. So we had no clue about it. The similarities are sheer coincidence. It’s good in a way as somewhere we are thinking in the same zone.”

Right.

Kaal, played by Vivek Oberoi, is the ultimate(ly unoriginal) supervillain.

For the first half of the film, he’s like the bad version of Professor Charles Xavier, except that he has hair.

Also like Xavier, Kaal has the powers of telekinesis but is confined to a wheelchair because he, apparently, has no bone marrow -- which is where all those little insignificant things called RBCs are -- and yet, Kaal magically survives.

This is a science fiction film. I kid you not.

In the second half, Kaal gets off his wheelchair and transforms from Xavier to Magneto with a 28 kilogram metal suit that reminds one of Robocop.

However, the makers of Krrish 3 have stayed true to their word that this is a ‘kiddie movie’ and gone ahead and taken a scene out of Megamind as well.

Kaal calls out to Priya (Priyanka Chopra) to reveal herself and if she does not, people would start getting hurt one by one -- just as Tighten did to Roxanne in the last minutes of Megamind.

Unfortunately, no blue dude with a gigantic head came to the rescue (the film, not the heroine).

Frog Man is a maanvar -- a cross between a manav (human being) and a jaanvar (animal). He has a 30-foot long, slimy tongue that he likes to cause havoc with.

Now I could spoil your fun that tell you that this character was inspired from X-Men’s Toad but I won’t, in celebration of the spirit of Krrish 3 -- which is a completely original film.

Frogman, Toad -- see? It’s not even remotely similar.

Far, far away in a land where the snow never stops, there stands a large, lone building in the middle of nowhere.

This is in Krrish 3, by the way, just in case you confuse it with that other building which is also large and lone and in a land where the snow never stops in Batman Begins.

The building in Krrish 3 is top-secret laboratory of an evil organisation built high up on snowy peaks while the one in Batman Begins is a top-secret hideout of an evil organisation built high up on snowy peaks.

Seriously, it would be absolutely unfair to call this a rip-off of an idea.

Rohit Mehra, popularly known as India’s own fictional version of Stephen Hawking, dreams of harnessing the power of the sun (no, not to end the fuel crisis) to resurrect the dead.

On the other hand, Dr Otto Octavious (from Spiderman 2) wants to harness the energy of the sun to prove his genius by creating a fusion power -- until he decides to take a walk on the dark side.

Rohit has a pen that attracts sun rays towards itself and Dr Octavious has robotic arms to handle the artificial sun he created. Both love their experiments unconditionally and eventually, both get burned alive by them.

Remember when the first film in the blockbuster The Matrix trilogy came out? Remember how we drooled over Neo’s suit and wore our black sunglasses at all times -- day or night? Let’s admit it, we’ve all had that Matrix phase.

Perhaps Krrish had one too. That would explain why he chose to don a shinier version of Neo’s costume; and coupling that with a mask that is cut in the shape of a lightening bolt on his forehead was probably his way of paying tribute to our generation’s most beloved fictional character, Harry Potter.

I say we should just let the lad be. These are just phases, and I hope the blatant copycatting is one too.

I have a confession to make. I have watched The Matrix trilogy 57 times until now. And I was surprised to see parts of the film playing when I went to watch Krrish 3.

The action sequences in Krrish 3 are amazing, simply because the action sequences in The Matrix trilogy were amazing.

However, the makers of Krrish 3 must be given some credit for trying. They were decent enough to flip the characters around -- they performed the same stunts but exchanged the bad guy with the good guy while ‘recreating’ those magical moments.
