The Sexiest Sari Scenes in the Movies

The Indian sari has tremendous personality. A slight shift in its drape or fabric can convey a brand new attitude altogether. Be it the cotton-flavoured simplicity of Nargis, spooky white elegance of Sadhana, earthy ethnicity of Shabana Azmi or the traditional texture of Rekha's trademark kanjeevarams, a sari is as versatile as it gets.

While we love the sari in all its avatars, nothing can beat its capacity to ooze oomph. Plus, considering Bollywood never-ending affair with glamour, heroines simply cannot do without the Big S to preserve their image of a larger-than-life goddess.

Only recently two of Bollywood's hottest denizens -- Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif -- stepped out in seven yards of chiffon to celebrate rain and romance opposite Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar in 3 Idiots and De Dana Dan respectively to sensational effects.

On that note, here's a look at some of the sexiest sari-clad moments in Hindi films.

Madhubala in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi

Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si, hums an awestruck Kishore Kumar. Can't blame him, can you? Seriously who wouldn't drop a jaw or two if Madhubala stood in front of them in her sopping, sultry best?

Though there's hardly any skin show involved, the legendary beauty uses her intrinsic sexiness, blithe goddess aura and a clinging film of a sari to create an air of intimacy.

Zeenat Aman in Satyam Shivam Sundaram

Comfortable in her sun-kissed skin, Zeenat Aman effortlessly slips into the garb of the Raj Kapoor brand of erotica.

While the film deals with the prejudice towards appearances, the viewer and her co-star Shashi Kapoor are too taken in by the leggy lady, in a provocatively draped sari, to take note of much else.

Mandakini in Ram Teri Ganga Maili

Taking a bath on celluloid can often result in an iconic scene.

While Psycho's murder in a shower continues to send shivers down one's spine, Mandakini's memorable rendezvous under a waterfall in a transparent white sari with nothing left for the imagination continues to, well, you know?

Dimple Kapadia in Saagar

There's something so impossibly H-O-T about the manner in which Dimple Kapadia tries to keep back a super turned-on Rishi Kapoor in R D Burman's equally feverish ditty, Jaane do na.

Is it Dimple's irresistible gorgeousness? Or the passionate chemistry between the two? Or her delicate red chiffon sari teamed with a string-happy blouse? We think it's a killer combination of all this and more.

Sridevi in Mr India

Unlike the current crop of actresses romping in two-pieces to acquire the tag of 'sexy,' Sridevi showed us how it's actually done with her feline body language alone in Mr India's explosive love song, Kaate nahi kat te.

With only a turquoise blue sari at her disposal, Sri preens and pouts seductively to serenade her mostly invisible beau. Mogamba khush hua? You bet!

Madhuri Dixit in Beta

The woman goes dhak dhak and all of India skips a heartbeat. Well, her blazing antics call for an exaggeration of this stature.

Clad in a golden yellow number, Madhuri Dixit is clearly on fire as she brazenly thrusts herself and her assets to Anand Milind's peppery beats. While the moral police was predictably displeased, Mads fans were more than delighted.

Urmila Matondkar in Satya

With Rangeela, Urmila proved she could juggle as both -- an actress as well as a sex symbol. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma employs this deadly attribute of the star to bring in a hint of tasteful glamour in the otherwise grim proceedings of his critically-acclaimed Satya.

Enjoying the first pitter-patter of rain, a demure Urmila highlights the curves of her perfect hour-glass figure in a super-soaked, figure-hugging sari.

Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na

If you thought teachers are all about primly dressed, no-nonsense ladies with severely tied buns and faultlessly pinned saris, filmmaker Farah Khan compels you to think again.

From halter necks to frilly sleeves, polka dots and ombre prints, Sushmita Sen famously flaunts her style and sex appeal evoking a classroom of sighs and ceetis.

At last, a teacher who doesn't have to beg the students to 'pay attention' in her class.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Shabd

It's only fair that a professor of fashion should settle for nothing less than a noodle strapped bikini blouse and clear black sari to set the floor ablaze with her snazzy salsa moves.

All the more better if this imparter of education happens to be Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Considering the number of costume dramas she has featured in, it's always a ravishing sight to see her do a modern-day sexy.

Priyanka Chopra in Dostana

Her love for short hems is rather apparent through her numerous red carpet appearances. But it's her Desi girl avatar we dig best.

The actress is simply a sight to behold as she frantically oscillates between Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham in her shiny bronze sari and ultra hot bikini blouse. Not too slim, neither too curvaceous, the Pyaar Impossible actress is just right for a sari.
