Reliance Big Pictures, which has been trying to find a place under the Hollywood sun, finally got serious recognition as two films it produced with Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks received six Golden Globe nominations.

The Help, based on a bestselling novel, received five nominations, including Best Drama, while the Spielberg-directed War Horse received the Best Picture (Drama) nomination.

A segregation drama set in the American south, The Help was made for under $35 million and has grossed over $210 million worldwide, most of it coming from America.

Viola Davis has been nominated for Best Actress for her role as a black maid in 1960s Mississippi, who collaborates with an aspiring author writing a book about the life of servants working for white people.

Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer were nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

War Horse, a World War I drama about the bond between two kids and a horse, will begin its limited engagement this month, going for big expansion in the next few weeks. It cost over $100 million to make.

The Golden Globe nomination list was led by The Artist, The Weinstein Company's silent (mostly), black-and-white film about an actor who is having trouble adapting to movies with sound in the 1920s. It received six nominations, including for Best Picture (Comedy).

Weinstein released last year's top winner The King's Speech. Considered initially to have limited potential, the film went on to gross about $400 million worldwide.

The 69th Golden Globe awards, next in popularity to the Oscars, will be given out on January 15 and televised worldwide by NBC.

The awards are given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In many categories, including Best Picture, the awards are given in two categories: Drama and Musical/Comedy. However, there are just five nominations in the director's category.

The French import The Artist, a smart production which pays homage to the early days of Hollywood, is a big hit in a handful of European countries where it has been showing for over a month. It is in a limited release in America.

In some 900 theatres, it has grossed a robust $24 million. It could double the screen count come Friday.

Armed with six Golden Globe nominations, it could be playing in hundreds of theatres by Christmas and open business worldwide. It is expected to score big in the Oscar nominations.

George Clooney has been nominated Best Director for the political drama The Ides of March, which is in competition for Best Picture (Drama) against The Descendants, which also stars him and for which he has a Best Actor nomination.

The story of a dysfunctional family, The Descendants received five Golden Globe nominations. Directed by the much respected Alexander Payne (Sideways), it is on its way to becoming a medium size hit. If it grabs solid Oscar nominations as well, it could reach $100 million in North America alone.

Also nominated for directing is Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), Martin Scorsese (Hugo) and Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris).

The romantic comedy Midnight in Paris is a surprise hit for Allen. Usually, if a film by him earns about $35 million worldwide, it is considered a success as the film is made for under $20 million. Midnight in Paris has grossed about $140 million worldwide.

Nominated for Best Film (Comedy), it also received nominations for Best Screenplay (Woody Allen), and Best Actor (Owen Wilson). The film is going to be released next week on DVD and Blu-ray, and the nominations could give it a boost.

It has been a good year for Ryan Gosling who received two nominations -- for Best Actor in Drama for his role as an idealistic campaign adviser in The Ides of March, and for Best Comedy Actor for the semi hit Crazy, Stupid, Love.
