Considering the fact that Surya is renowned stuntman of Tamil films' Jaguar Thangam's maiden venture, which also marks his son's debut, you ought to have a pretty good idea of what the music would be like. And depressingly, you would be right. Here is music director Jerome Pushparaj's offering:
Veeradhi Veeranada sung by Tippu, is your regulation rural folk-song with villagers doing the kulavai, accompanied by an energetic beat, catcalls, and offhand violin interludes. With stray mentions of Rajni's Baadsha and Vijay's Sivakasi, you know what exactly this introductory piece is going to bring you.
Girish and Vinaya's song, following a glitzy Arabian setting, once again follows set patterns. Strange phrases follow, but the beat of Vettaiyada Vada makes up for the humdrum lyrics -- if you listen hard enough.
Sammadhama, rendered by pop star Shalini and Karthi follows the pattern of the modern/romantic/youthful, as set by Harris Jeyaraj, Yuvan Shankar Raja, and the like. With a safe and steady rhythm, the song is softly done.
Padaiyedu padaiyedu sooriyane begins with Mervin's banging English phrases, while Tippu takes over in an encouraging-hero fashion. Synthesised music mingles with a brisk beat, while lyrics lavish elaborate praise on the hero as usual. It's an oft-heard tune, but one which is worth a listen.
The album wraps up with the film's theme music rendered by Mervin, which effectively sums up what Surya is going to be all about -- action all the way, with notes and tunes that remind of ancient Rajnikanth movies, and an outright rip-off of Lawrence of Arabia's theme music.
Jerome Pushparaj seems to have the makings of a good music-director; he certainly got the basics right. But it isn't enough.
