Yuvan Shankar Raja is on a roll. Three of his films are releasing this Diwali. One of them is Machakkaran, directed by Tamilvannan, and starring Jeevan and Kamna Jethmalani.

Yuvan's five compositions in Machakkaran are in the contemporary style. All the numbers except one have impressive lyrics by Pa Vijay. The odd one out which is equally captivating is by a new entrant, Deventhran.

Nellayila mannedutha, the opening number is the intro cum title track. Rendered by Roshini, it starts off initially in a folk mode and then turns into a racy track. Powerfully pitched, the number has effective percussive support including high energy drumming and trumpet expositions.

Vanatheyum meghatheyum is an enjoyable melodious number. Hariharan renders this piece differing from his usual manner. The intensity of the stringed instruments, Pa Vijay's sentimental lyrics, supportive chorus, flute sallies and mild hip-hop together with Hariharan's emotional rendition make this a stirring piece.

Mahalakshmi Iyer's Vayasuponnukku is a strikingly rhythmic piece about the pet preferences of a young girl. The instrumental prelude, catchy chorus in interlude, solo flute notes and swara elucidations combined with the niceties and nuances of Mahalakshmi's voice make this a joyful and exciting number.

Next up is Jiguruthanda, a techno melodic spin by Shankar Mahadevan and Sneha Banth. The duo breeze through with unbridled energy. Stunning rhythm, dynamic drumbeats and short rap passage make this racy duet a danceable number with potential to become a disco favourite.

Nee nee nee by Hariharan and Madhushree has interesting lyrics by debutant lyricist Deventhran. This is a mood-lifting duet with Hariharan singing in almost a whispery style and Madhushree in her honey-timbred voice giving excellent support. Catchy interlude with impressive foray on stringed instruments prop up this track.

Yuvan rounds off with an encore of the opening number Nellayile mannedutha.

A commendable effort from Yuvan Shankar Raja.
