The BIGGEST September Releases

While theaters are gradually opening up, movie are still taking their time to release on the big screen.

Bell Bottom and Chehre have shown the way, but there's a long way to go.

September has been a month of big hits in the past.

Joginder Tuteja looks at the big September hits in the past decade.

 

Chhichhore, 2019
Box office collection: Rs 153.09 crore

Sushant Singh Rajput's last theatre release was also his biggest hit ever. Chhichhore, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, co-starring Shraddha Kapoor, the film saw the actors in various stages of their lives.

September 2019 was, in fact, the best ever for Bollywood as Ayushmann Khurranna's Dream Girl followed at Rs 142.26 crore.

 

Sui Dhaaga - Made In India, 2018
Box office collection: Rs 79.10 crore

Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma stepped into a totally de-glam territory for this Yash Raj Films offering and made it a decent success at the box office.

A story about a lower middle class couple, who brave all odds, to step into the world of fashion design, made sure that Sui Dhaaga did well amongst multiplex audiences.

 

Judwaa 2, 2017
Box office collection: Rs 138.61 crore

Varun saw back-to-back September hits, which started with 2017's Judwaa 2.

The remake of the Salman Khan starrer, made by the original director David Dhawan, was a superhit at the box office.

Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez co-starred in the film.

 

M S Dhoni - The Untold Story, 2016
Box office collection: Rs 133.50 crore

Sushant Singh Rajput's other big superhit also released in September.

M S Dhoni - The Untold Story was an official biopic of cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni and went on to score a century at the box office.

It was directed by Neeraj Pandey and received good reviews too.

The month also saw the release of the Amitabh Bachchan-Taapsee Pannu starrer P.I.N.K. which did Rs 65.39 crore of business.

 

Welcome Back, 2015
Box office collection: Rs 97 crore

John Abraham has just missed a century twice over -- first in Welcome Back and later in Batla House.

Welcome Back was a comedy by Anees Bazmee, which saw great comedy by Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar.

It was a sequel to the Akshay Kumar film, Welcome, which released in 2007.

 

Mary Kom, 2014
Box office collection: Rs 64 crore

The only leading lady who played the central protagonist in a September biggie since 2010, Priyanka Chopra scored a hit with Omung Kumar's Mary Kom.

A biopic on the legendary boxer, the film was produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

 

Grand Masti, 2013
Box office collection: Rs 102 crore

A huge surprise for the industry and even those associated with the film, Grand Masti ended up scoring a century and that too way back in 2013.

Though Director Indra Kumar was sure about the potential of this adult comedy, for Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani, the second installment of the Masti franchise was a good September gift.

 

Barfi!, 2012
Box office collection: Rs 112 crore

Before Mary Kom. Priyanka saw a September hit in 2012, when she played a mentally challenged woman in Barfi!

The Ranbir Kapoor led film also marked Ileana D'Cruz's debut in Bollywood.

After a decent start at the box office, Anurag Basu's directorial went on to gather good pace.

Primarily a multiplex success, Barfi! found itself in the Rs 100 crore club.

 

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, 2011
Box office collection: Rs 57.40 crore

Katrina Kaif made the most of her author-backed role in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.

Director Ali Abbas Zafar, who is now better known for his Salman Khan starrers like Tiger Zinda Hai and Sultan, made his debut as a film-maker with this romcom.

With Imran Khan and Ali Zafar as the leading men, this one emerged a good success.

 

Dabangg, 2010
Box office collection: Rs 140 crore

Salman Khan stepped into a whole new league after his blockbuster Dabangg.

The huge success of this Abhinav Kashyap directed film can be gauged from the fact that it remains the second highest September grosser in the past 11 years, after Chhichhore.

Sonakshi Sinha made her debut in this film, which went on to become a franchise.
