Joginder Tuteja look at the biggest hits in April during the decade gone by.
Kalank, 2019
Box office collection: Rs 81 crores
Kalank took a good opening at the box office with Rs 21.60 crores coming in on the first day.
It was all downhill from there for the Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt starrer and it folded up at Rs 81 crores.
There were massive expectations from this biggie and though it was the biggest April release in 2019, it fell way short of the milestone set for it.
October, 2018
Box office collection: Rs 45.50 crores
Varun Dhawan had seen an April release the year before as well with October.
The Shoojit Sircar directed drama underperformed due to its grim narrative.
Moreover, Varun had done something entirely different from the fun image that he carries and hence the film didn't quite reach out to his loyal target audience.
This was still the biggest film of April 2018.
Baahubali 2, 2017
Box office collection: Rs 511 crores
Baahubali 2 is not just the biggest ever for April or 2017; it is the biggest of all time as no other film has even come close to its lifetime.
The next big one after Baahubali 2 is Dangal and the Aamir Khan starrer was comparatively way below at a lifetime number of Rs 387.38 crores.
Baaghi, 2016
Box office collection: Rs 77 crores
Five years ago, Tiger Shroff arrived with Baaghi and that film was a superhit.
Shah Rukh Khan's Fan appeared the same month and did marginally better in box office collections at Rs 85 crores, but it was still considered a flop due to which Baaghi makes the cut here.
The Sajid Nadiadwala produced franchise has emerged a major franchise since.
Ek Paheli Leela, 2015
Box office collection: Rs 26.57
Sunny Leone was then in vogue and though none of her releases matched the success of Ragini MMS 2, Ek Paheli Leela did some kind of business.
This is also the last of Sunny's successes. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy did marginally better (Rs 27.05 crores) but was deemed a flop.
2 States, 2014
Box office collection: Rs 102 crores
Only two Bollywood films scored a century in April and one of these is 2 States.
It is the only Arjun Kapoor film which features in the 100 Crore Club.
2 States boasted of good performances from Arjun and Alia Bhatt and chartbuster music which helped find it good traction amongst youngsters.
Aashiqui 2, 2013
Box office collection: Rs 78 crores
Though Aashiqui 2 may not have hit a century, it is the only Bollywood blockbuster in April during the last 10 years that did tremendous business despite very low costs.
The Bhatts ensured that the music of Aashiqui 2 lived up to the hype and the rest was taken care by Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor's endearing act that blossomed under Mohit Suri's direction.
Housefull 2, 2012
Box office collection: Rs 116 crores
Akshay Kumar sees so many releases in a year that it doesn't matter whether he arrives in April or any other month.
He scored a century in April with Housefull 2, incidentally his first biggie to enter the 100 Crore Club.
The film arrived post the board examinations and was a big hit amongst kids, youth and family audiences.
F.A.L.T.U, 2011
Box office collection: Rs 24.57 crores
F.A.L.T.U. turned out to be a sweet little success.
Boasting of the chartbuster track Chaar Baj Gaye, this Jackky Bhagnani film did well amongst the youth.
Akshay's Thank You released in the same month, but didn't do well. F.A.L.T.U. was the winner.
Housefull, 2010
Box office collection: Rs 78 crores
Akshay had scored well at the beginning of the decade with Housefull kick-starting the Sajid Nadiadwala franchise.
Nadiadwala traditionally chooses April for his releases with five out of ten films in this list.
That's because he targets family audiences post the board exams.
