By now, everyone knows that warring superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan hugged and made up at politician Baba Siddique's Iftar party on Sunday, July 21. So why exactly did they fall apart? We look back.

The cold war between Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan started five years ago on July 16, 2008, at Katrina Kaif's birthday bash. The actors got into an ugly fight at the party, that  Salman had organised for Kartina, his then girlfriend.

At that time, both the Khans were hosting reality shows, with varying degrees of success.

Salman reportedly told Shah Rukh that the popularity of his show Dus Ka Dum was much better than the latter's Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain. To counter that, Shah Rukh passed a comment about Salman's ex-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai, which did not go down well with Salman.

In August 2010, both actors were present at the same time in Mehboob Studios in Bandra, a western suburb of Mumbai -- SRK was shooting for a television commercial and Salman was having media interactions as he was promoting his film Dabangg.

Yet, they studiously avoided each other.

They managed to avoid each other at public events as well.

One such event was the Star Screen Awards in 2011. SRK co-hosted the event with Shahid Kapoor and Salman made a special appearance but the two did not share the stage or red carpet together at any point.

Ironically, both SRK and Salman bagged the Best Actor award for their films My Name Is Khan and Dabangg respectively.

But while they avoided each other, they always defended each other with words.

Salman had defended Shah Rukh on his show, Bigg Boss Season 6.

Contestant Imam Siddique had claimed that he had cast Shah Rukh in advertisements, and they had worked very well for him.

The statement did not go down well with Salman, and he snapped: “Shah Rukh is in the industry because of his hard work and support of his fans, not because Imam cast him in an advertisement.”

Earlier this year, at a press conference, Salman had said that he never had any arguments with Shah Rukh and was ready to call truce.

"If anyone comes to talk or meet me, I will talk to them or meet them nicely. I don't care who is whose friend. It doesn't matter to me at all,” he had said.

Last November, Shah Rukh Khan had hinted on a patch up at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in Delhi.

SRK said that Salman and his family have been very close to him and that he respected them.

He added that both of them disagreed on issues that were too personal and there would come a time when everything would be resolved.

This was not the first time SRK had hinted at a patch-up. In 2011, on the chat show Koffee With Karan, SRK publicly apologised to Salman saying: 'If Salman or anyone else is angry with me, it is 100 per cent my fault.'

In the same month, Aamir Khan tried to play mediator between the two at the premiere of SRK's film Jab Tak Hai Jaan but he failed.

But what Aamir couldn't do Baba Siddique managed quite well.
