A National School of Drama alumnus, Satish Kaushik started his career as assistant director to Shekhar Kapoor (Masoom, Mr. India).
Kapur was going to direct two films -- Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Prem for Boney Kapoor but they had a fallout due to certain differences. Kaushik later directed both the films.
Apart from these two film, Kaushik has over the years made many films which have either been a remake or been inspired by some other films thus earning the title of ‘Remake King.'
Kaushik’s latest film Gang of Ghosts is a remake of acclaimed Bengali film Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012).
A comic saga about the (after) life and times of ghosts from the past, Gangs Of Ghosts is a story of a haunted house, which is being pulled down and replaced by a swanky shopping mall.
We take a look at the films which were Remake/Inspired Films by Satish Kaushik in Bollywood.
Milenge Milenge (2010) - Inspired by Serendipity (2001)
Image: Kareena and Shahid Kapoor in Milenge MilengeA romantic comedy with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in leading roles, Serendipity was a sweet, feel-good film about lovers who believed in coincidence driving their relationship.
Picking up this thread, Kaushik went on to include quite a few Bollywood ingredients.
Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor were the lovers (on and off screen too then). The film was delayed for a long time and was released after the two stars had split.
Teree Sang (2009) - Inspired by 2 Young (2005)
Image: Ruslaan Mumtaz and Sheena Shahabadi in Teree SangCantonese film 2 Young (with Jaycee Chan and Fiona Sit) was about a teenage couple falling in love and the girl getting pregnant.
Kaushik turned this into a romantic social affair with newcomers Ruslaan Mumtaz and Sheena Shahabadi.
The film had a strong theme and some very good music by Sachin-Jigar who were launched by Kaushik.
Karzzzz (2008) - Remake of Karz (1980)
Image: Himesh Reshammiya and Shweta Kumar in KarzzzzAlmost three decades after Subhash Ghai made the memorable musical Karz with Rishi Kapoor, Simi Garewal and Tina Munim, Kaushik came up his own version of this reincarnation thriller.
Starring Himesh Reshammiya as the film’s lead actor with Urmila Matondkar and Shweta Kumar the film was a big disaster at the box office.
Shaadi Se Pehle (2006) - Inspired by Meri Biwi Ki Shaadi (1979)
Image: Akshaye Khanna and Mallika Sherawat in Shaadi Se PehleThe Amol Palekar starrer Meri Biwi Ki Shaadi was about a man who wanted to arrange for the marriage of his wife (Ranjita) since he was dying of a terminal illness.
Kaushik gave Shaadi Se Pehle an entirely different treatment by changing the premise from a married couple to Akshaye Khanna and Ayesha Takia playing lovers.
He also brought in a bombshell Mallika Sherawat to spice up the plot but in vain.
Vaada (2005) - Inspired by Tamil film Sabash (2000)
Image: Ameesha Patel and Arjun Rampal in VaadaA little known Tamil film, Sabash, with Parthiban, Divya Unni and Ranjit, caught Satish Kaushik’s attention.
The filmmaker gave it a much more polished, upmarket and contemporary look by remaking it as Vaada.
It is the story of a blind man (Arjun Rampal) who takes revenge on his straying wife (Ameesha Patel) and her boyfriend (Zayed Khan).
It is best remembered for Arjun Rampal's brooding performance as the husband.
Tere Naam (2003) - Remake of Tamil film Sethu (1999)
When Vikram starrer Sethu was ready, there was no distributor willing to pick it up due to its depressing ending.
However, after releasing in a single theatre, the film went on to do well.
Kaushik remade the film with Salman Khan, and the film which was a huge success.
The music of the film was so popular that it continued to play across music channels for the next two years.
Badhai Ho Badhai (2002) - Remake of Tamil film Poove Unakkaga (1996)
Image: Anil Kapoor and Suresh Menon in Badhai Ho BadhaiThe story of a man who tries to reunite two warring families, Poove Unakkaga starred Vijay, Sangita and Anju Aravind.
Kaushik gave the film a feel-good touch and made it a musical affair with Anil Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty and Keerti Reddy.
The film was special for two reasons: it featured Kapoor as a fat young man and marked his debut as a producer.
Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai (2001) - Remake of Telugu film Tholi Prema (1998)
Image: Kareena and Tusshar Kapoor in Mujhe Kucch Kehna HaiPawan Kalyan showed promise at the very start of his career with Tholi Prema. The film was about two youngsters (Keerthi Reddy was the heroine) who fall in love in an unconventional manner and separated with a promise to reunite after meeting their goals.
The plot was used by Kaushik for Tusshar Kapoor's debut film Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, which was also the second outing for Kareena Kapoor after Refugee.
Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000) - Remake of Telugu film Pellichesukundam (1997)
Image: Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas HaiVenkatesh was the hero in Pellichesukundam, which was about a man falling in love with a rape victim (played by Soundarya).
A social family drama, it was remade as Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, with Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the lead pair.
The film also had some good music.
A highlight of the film was the comic track featuring Anupam Kher, Jaspal Bhatti, Johnny Lever and Himani Shivpuri.
Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999) - Remake of Telugu film Pavithra Bandham (1996)
Image: Kajol and Anil Kapoor in Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte HainVenkatesh and Soundarya were the lead pair in Pavithra Bandham.
Anil Kapoor was the leading man in the Hindi remake with Kajol as the leading lady. The film was about a man who comes to realise the value of love and marriage. The film and the music did well.
