Sanjay Leela Bhansali revisits the colourful exuberance and scale of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh starrer Ram Leela.

I
s Deepika Padukone the new Aishwarya Rai?

It seems like a question worth posing after seeing the trailer for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next film, Ramleela

The new film looks to be sharing a fair bit of DNA with Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which was Rai’s breakout film, and while it can be argued that Padukone broke through quite a while ago, a Bhansali success could take her career to the next level.

Set in Gujarat, the film eschews the monochromatic, softer colour palettes Bhansali’s films have stuck to of late, and embraces vivid, even garish colours with much vim.

With cinematography by Ravi Varman and music by Bhansali himself, the new film looks flavourful and most enticing.

Ramleela, based in a walled city, is rumoured to be yet another Romeo And Juliet adaptation, and the citizens look triggerhappy enough for this to be the case.

One of the men with gun in hand is the now-hirsute Ranveer Singh, but his is just a water pistol. Deepika’s revolver looks a lot more real, even though it might just shoot a bullet of blue paint at Ranveer.

Even this quick glimpse makes the chemistry between the actors apparent, and there is much repartee with the girl getting the better of her man each time.

Padukone, who bites her lip a lot, looks ravishing even when she’s making fun of Singh’s hairless chest. But then there’s screaming and yelling and shocked faces. The fun bits look better than the dramatic bits, but Singh wields a sword quite well.

Ramleela releases November 15 and may well be a film worth looking forward to.
