When Yash Chopra spotted Poonam winning the Femina Miss Young India contest, she wanted to cast her in a leading role. But by then, the cast for Trishul was ready, and he could only offer her a small role.

But Chopra did not forget the pretty face, and cast her in Noorie, opposite Farooq Shaikh, a well-known actor then. She got her first hit, and did several films like Sohni Mahiwal and Ek Chadar Maili Si before giving it all up after her marriage to producer Ashok Thakeria.

Recently, the actress has started acting in television soaps, and is toying with the idea of a filmi comeback.
